ENCINITAS —- The removal of nearly a dozen trees from a city park Friday morning sparked a colorful protest complete with a tree-sitter.The man, 27-year-old Andrew Watkins, said that he and two friends had climbed into the approximately 25-foot-tall tipu tree in Orpheus Park at 2:30 am Friday and began constructing a temporary plywood platform. His friends came down, but Watkins remained, spending the morning playing guitar and entertaining the entire fourth grade from the nearby Paul Ecke Central Elementary School. The students walked into the park about 10:30 am, carrying picket signs and shouting, “Save the tree.” There was a festive atmosphere by the park’s closing time of 10 pm Residents with dogs in tow gathered to watch the scene, and children hung from the branches. Several children climbed the tree to hang out with Watkins and sing songs as someone payed an accordian. Balloons and candles adorned the tipu, which was illuminated by the lights of TV news crews.”I’m doing it to save this tree, because a lot of kids love this tree,” Watkins said late Friday. “And to fight global warming.” Watkins said he’s prepared to stay there “indefinitely,” and that he’s waiting for the mayor to say she won’t cut it down. The city’s park and recreation director, Chris Hazelton, said there was no plan to forcefully evict Watkins, and as of about 10:15 pm, there were no city officials in sight at the park.
