Osage Cove Volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a fire on Bass Drive just before 11pm on New Years Day night. The reporting party said a detached garage was on fire but was very close to the kitchen area of the home and it was threatening the home. An Osage Nations officer was one of the first on the scene and told us when he arrived it had already spread to the house as well. Bass Drive is approximately 11 miles east of Ponca City on US 60 and is in Sandy Park Estates just below Kaw Dam and Kaw Lake. Being a rural area there were no fire hydrants and the 1st truck on the scene started requesting assistance from nearby fire departments. McCord Volunteer FD along with 2 units from Ponca City FD were sent to the fire. With Osage Coves FD just a mile or so away trucks didn’t have far to go to refill. Fire fighters said the home and garage would both be considered a total loss. Total value wasn’t known at the time but a neighbor said the homes in the area are valued at 5000 to just over 0000. As of 1:45am fire fighters were still on the scene and no injuries were being reported.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid joined Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan to tour a Las Vegas neighborhood Wednesday. Las Vegas leads the nation in foreclosures and approximately 67 percent of the city’s current mortgage holders have mortgages that are higher than the worth of their homes. Secretary Donovan announced plans to deploy HUD Foreclosure Rapid Response Teams to assess the areas hardest hit by foreclosure — starting in Las Vegas. This is, “good news for Nevadans fighting to stay in their homes,” said Reid. During his visit to Nevada, Secretary Donovan also also introduced an expansion of the Home Affordable Refinance Program to include participation by borrowers who are current but up to 125 percent underwater on their mortgages. Under authorization provided by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, borrowers whose mortgages are currently owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will now be allowed to refinance those loans according to the terms of the Home Affordable Refinance program established earlier this year. Senator Reid, Secretary Donovan, and Congresswoman Dina Titus toured a neighborhood that has experienced several foreclosures in recent years, negatively impacting the property values of surrounding homes. The neighborhood has been targeted for Clark Countys Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which will use funds to purchase and rehab foreclosed homes, provide downpayment and closing cost assistance to those purchasing foreclosed …
